Why I Moved My Blog To WordPress.org & (I think) You Should Too

I recently moved my blog from Wordpress.com to Wordpress.org. Here are the reasons why (and why you should consider it too).

After starting my blog back up a few weeks ago I had some very common blogger dilemmas… Should I stay on wordpress.com? Should I purchase my own domain? Who should I have host my site if I do?

I had no one what to do for the best…

So I have a long, hard Google search…as you do, and for what I hope to get out of my blog, came to the conclusion that moving to WordPress.org and purchasing the Forever Travel Bug domain was the best option. Also having found an amazing deal on hosting (with Bluehost) I decided to just go for it and see how it went.

So far I’m loving it, and I’m going to tell you why.

  • The Possibilities are Endless. I honestly had no idea I could do so much with my blog. the level of customisation, the sheer amount of themes (free and paid) to choose from, not to mention plug ins.
  • So many plug ins. I know I haven’t even scratched the surface yet, but I have tried so many… Yoast & Jetpack are essentials, but there’s plug ins for social media sharing, backups, security, contact pages….everything under the sun. All of the star rated, and with full installation instruction. I’m so excited to take a more in depth look, and make a post about my favourites.
  • Between making my custom site beautiful and the help of plug ins, I can now seriously start contemplating monetising my blog in the future. This is near impossible on wordpress.com (unless you have a lot of traffic, and even then it’s not easy. Now I can place as many or few ads as I like, and choose myself what time. Also market affiliations now seem more viable. I’m so excited to start trying out different avenues of making a small revenue – maybe enough to cover hosting costs.
  • Which brings me to the matter of cost. A small set up fee (I think around $10), and then a small monthly thereafter (around $3), and I have my own site and domain fully controlled by me. I think it is so worth it. Plus to get the full potential from your blog you may feel you need this anyway, so you may as well get the features of wordpress.org too.

So is it worth the (small) fees, and the risk? … Well, I think so.

Do you? What platform is your site on? have you ever considered changing? let me know your thoughts in the comments!

New Blog…

An explanation of what my new blog will be all about. Want to know more…?

And so it begins…

I’ve been thinking about starting a new blog for a while now…but I didn’t know what to say, or even what to say it about.

Everyone always says to choose something you’re passionate about (maybe that’s why I’ve never stuck to one of my previous attempts?), and that is what I’m going to do.

I love to travel! I love going new places and re-visiting old, be it 10 miles away or 10000.

So I’m going to document the rest of my final Uni year…and tell you a bit about my past travels, as well as the ones still to come this year. Oktoberfest this weekend! I will have lots of photos to share!

And come next summer… I’m going to take you on a life-long journey with me!
